This Weekend

The weather has been wonderful this weekend, so we went camping at our camp in the forest one night.

And of course I had to bring some knitting :) I'm knitting on a pair of thick wool socks that we call "læsta" in my part of Norway. They are the kind of wool socks you use as a second layer over a thinner pair of socks and I used them all winter to keep warm!

On Saturday we decided to go on a hike. We even managed to drag the teenager along!! But the forest was so full of mosquitoes that we had to give up halfway to the top :( It was horrible and we ended up with so many bites... But we'll try again later this fall as it was an easy hike and I know the view is great.

So instead we ended up buying some shrimps and spent the evening outside at home (where we had no mosquitoes!) enjoying the warm weather. How was your weekend??

The Sun is Back :)

Cold day in the forest, -15 C

We saw the first glimpse of the sun a few days ago and today she colored the mountaintops pink when we hiked to out lean-to in the forest.

Cold day in the forest, -15 C

It's cold today with -15 C, but we have a saying here in Norway - "There is not such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!" So if it's cold, put on warm clothes!

And a fire, hot tea and warm wool mittens makes you forget it's cold :)
I'm wearing my Rigmor's Selbu mittens, which has become my go to mittens when I'm outdoors. I think I'll have to knit up some more.

Cold day in the forest, -15 C

And finally the sun came out!
So good to now there is just lighter and longer days ahead!

The forest was filled with hare (and fox) tracks today. I'm wondering if the fox managed to get any dinner...

Snowshoeing & Twist Bread

It's been raining here for days now... But we decided to pack our backpacks and head out in the forest snowshoeing today despite the rain. And I had some great hours with my boys :)

Twist Bread

5oo ml flour
0.5 teaspoon baking powder
0.5 packet of dry yeast
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
5 tablespoon oil

Mix it all and let it rise about 30-45 minutes before use.
Twist it around a stick or a fried sausage. It tastes good with sugar and cinnamon too :)

Berry picking

Hard to hide that we've been picking blueberries today...

The weather has change and it's a bit chilly with only 10 C these days. The air hasn't got that sharp, crisp smell of fall yet, but I guess it's just around the corner... I look forward to it though as it's my favourite season :) It's great to be out in the forest without all the flies

The forest was full of blueberries, and I came over a path were they was big :)

We picked black crowberries to. I plan to make "saft" from it. It's a juice you mix with water.

No I need to find the energy to clean all the berries so I can start to make "saft" and perhaps some jam tomorrow. I'll freeze the biggest blueberries as they are so we can make pai from it :)

We also came across some indians in the forest :) I think they were hunting bears and wolves.

The next berry to pick is lingonberries. But they need a few weeks before they are ripe.

Alone

In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.
     - John Muir -

The kids are spending the week with my mom, so I'm alone during the day until Hubby comes home from work. Since the weather was great today with 18 C, I desided I'd take a walk in the forest to our lean-to. So I grabbed my camera and a water bottle and headed out. I haden't come far before I heard some noises, I just thought I had scared a bird up. But no, just ahead was four mooses! I only managed to take a few (not so good) pictures before they saw me and ran away. So I sure received more than I seeked today :) Just wish the kids had been with me, but then again, I guess they would have made so much noice that the mooses would have ran off before we would even now they were there...

I must say I wasn't sure if I should walk all the way up to the lean-to, knowing there was four mooses running around in the forest. But I desided to walk on, and it was good to rest and have a sip of water when I came up. I couldn't sit for long though as I got surronded by horse flies :(

If it hadn't been for all the flies I might have laid down in one of these soft spots. Big areas of the  forest are filled with the flowers of skrubbær / Bunchberry. Looking forward to Fall when all this will become red.

This is my favourite forest flower!

Tiny frog

I almost steped on this tiny frog when I headed home, but I managed to grab him before he jumped his way into the gras.

Sledding

We have had some great weather this weekend. Sun and  temperatures around -6C. Which are mild compared to the -32C we had at the start of the week. Hopefully all this cold weather is over for now.
Since we started to get a bit of cabin fever, we headed out in the forest today for some sledding :)

Tracks from a fox

A fox had been out walking during the night.

Sledding

The kids made lots of trips up and down the hill. And got some snowbaths too ;)

Endre, Eirin & me by the fire.
